Ablakwa Pledges Tech-Driven Reforms for Passport Issuance

Accra, Ghana – Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister-nominee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has vowed to introduce technology-driven reforms to modernize Ghana’s passport application and issuance system.
Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 29, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the urgent need for modernization to improve efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in the passport acquisition process.
He acknowledged the numerous challenges faced by citizens, including delays, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and the exploitation of applicants by middlemen.
“There are too many complaints about how difficult it is to get passports in good time. I have reviewed some briefs and noticed a backlog of over 70,000 uncollected passports. There are also serious concerns about middlemen, or ‘goro boys,’ taking advantage of applicants,” he noted.
To tackle these issues, Mr. Ablakwa outlined plans to leverage digital solutions to streamline processes, eliminate corruption, and enhance service delivery.
He further assured the committee that, under his leadership, the Foreign Affairs Ministry would introduce an advanced online application system and improve the biometric data capture process.
“I recall former Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchway expressing frustration over the crisis at the passport office. I strongly believe that technology should be at the center of our reforms. Ghanaians who already have a Ghana Card should not be required to visit passport offices for biometric data capture,” he added.
His commitment to enhanced digital integration aims to transform passport services into a more efficient, user-friendly, and transparent system for all Ghanaians.
