Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea Takes Over as Director-General of Ghana Health Service

Accra, Ghana – Neurosurgeon Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea has officially assumed office as the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), succeeding Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye. Prof. Akoriyea has pledged to align the service’s operations with the governing party’s reset agenda for the health sector.
The reset Ghana agenda, outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto, prioritizes staff welfare, the continuation of unfinished health infrastructure projects from the previous NDC administration, and the Mahama Care Programme, among other initiatives.
Prof. Akoriyea emphasized that the GHS would now focus on implementing policies that fulfill the party’s commitments, stating, “If this is not your objective, then I am sorry.” He also urged staff to maintain professionalism, enforce law and order, and avoid internal conflicts, warning that he would not tolerate backbiting.
Enhancing ICT for Better Healthcare
Acknowledging the role of modern technology in healthcare delivery, Prof. Akoriyea stressed that the GHS must leverage improved information and communication technology (ICT) to enhance services.
“Some 50 years ago, we did not have the technology we have today, yet the health system functioned efficiently. We have no excuse to fail,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of commitment and teamwork in achieving success.
Outgoing DG’s Farewell Message
Dr. Kuma-Aboagye, in his farewell address, expressed confidence in his successor’s ability to lead and called on GHS staff to extend the same dedication and support to Prof. Akoriyea. He highlighted past achievements and expressed optimism that the use of advanced technology would drive further progress in the health sector.
He also urged the new Director-General to prioritize staff welfare, a key promise of his administration.
Ministry of Health’s Endorsement
The Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, Alhaji Hafiz Adam, praised Dr. Kuma-Aboagye for his contributions to the service and encouraged Prof. Akoriyea to build upon the progress made.
He advised the new Director-General to be fair and just in his leadership and ensure that staff are adequately resourced to maximize their performance.
“That is the only way he can hold people accountable,” Alhaji Hafiz Adam noted.
Prof. Akoriyea’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Ghana Health Service, with expectations high for advancements in healthcare delivery and the implementation of key reforms.
