Parliamentary Probe into Vetting Chaos: Committee Chair Assures Fair Inquiry

Accra, Ghana – February 3, 2025 – The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee investigating the recent chaos during the vetting of ministerial nominees, Emmanuel Bedzrah, has assured the public that the inquiry is not a political witch-hunt but rather an effort to uphold order and accountability.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Bedzrah, who is also the MP for Ho West, stressed the committee’s commitment to transparency and impartiality, urging MPs, the media, and attendees to provide relevant information to aid the investigation.

“The committee would like to place on record that it is not part of its job to target or witch-hunt anyone. We’re not here to witch-hunt any of our colleagues or Members of Parliament. This work is to look for evidence of any Member of Parliament who may have flouted the rules of engagement in this house,” he stated.

Committee’s Mandate and Public Engagement

The seven-member committee, established by Speaker Alban Bagbin on January 31, 2025, is tasked with identifying MPs responsible for the disruptions and recommending appropriate sanctions.

To enhance public participation, the committee has:
Created a WhatsApp platform for information submissions.
Scheduled public hearings, allowing witnesses to testify about the chaotic altercations that took place on January 30, 2025.

MPs to Bear Repair Costs

Speaker Alban Bagbin has made it clear that no public funds will be used to repair damages caused during the altercations. Instead, MPs found guilty will be surcharged to cover the costs.

Currently, four MPs are serving a two-week suspension over their roles in the incident. The committee’s findings are expected to restore decorum and accountability within Parliament.
