Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin Takes Responsibility for Vetting Chaos; Speaker Lifts MPs’ Suspension

Accra, Ghana – February 4, 2025Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has publicly accepted full responsibility for the chaos that erupted during last week’s vetting of ministerial nominees, which led to the destruction of state property and the suspension of four MPs.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, the Effutu MP expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging the public concern it generated.

“Mr. Speaker, I take full responsibility as a leader on my side for all actions that took place. I will therefore conclude by inviting you, Mr. Speaker, to, in the circumstances and with the assurance given, consider a recession of the decision you communicated to the house, as well as all consequential matters thereto,” Afenyo-Markin pleaded.

His appeal to Speaker Alban Bagbin comes despite the Minority’s earlier claim that the Speaker lacked the legal authority to suspend the MPs.

Speaker Bagbin Rescinds Suspension

Following Afenyo-Markin’s plea, Speaker Alban Bagbin agreed to lift the suspension of the four MPs involved:

  • Frank Annor Dompreh
  • Rockson Dafeamekpor
  • Hassan Tampuli
  • Jerry Ahmed Shaib

In announcing the reversal, Speaker Bagbin invoked a fatherly approach:

“As a father, when your son commits an offence, you don’t punish your son to the extent of breaking his leg.”

He added:

“I will proceed to lift the suspension of the four Members of Parliament. The MPs who were affected can now return to the chamber or join sittings… To whom much is given, much is expected.”

With the suspension lifted, the affected MPs are now expected to resume parliamentary duties immediately. The resolution is seen as a move towards restoring calm and order in Parliament following the heated vetting process.
