EC to Re-run Council of State Elections in North East and Ashanti Regions on February 17

Accra, Ghana – February 12, 2025

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that the Council of State elections in the North East and Ashanti Regions will be re-run on Monday, February 17, 2025, following a tie in one region and a disruption in the other.

Reasons for the Re-run

In a press release issued on February 12, the EC cited two key reasons for the decision:

  1. North East Region: The top two candidates each secured six votes, resulting in a tie, making a re-run necessary to determine the winner. “There was a tie in the Election in the North East Region. The top two candidates each had six (6) votes. As such, the Election has to be re-run,” the EC stated.
  2. Ashanti Region: The election was disrupted by thugs, preventing the process from being concluded.

Security Measures for the Re-run

The Electoral Commission has taken steps to ensure a peaceful re-run by engaging security agencies to prevent further disruptions.

“The Commission has written to the Ghana Police Service and copied the National Election Security Taskforce to heighten security at the venues of the elections,” the release stated.

The EC is determined to avoid a repeat of the violence in the Ashanti Region, which not only delayed the process but also raised concerns about voter and official safety.

The Council of State serves as a key advisory body to the President of Ghana, with members elected from all 16 regions. The upcoming re-run elections in the North East and Ashanti Regions will ensure that these areas are adequately represented in national governance and policymaking.
