Gregory Afoko Granted Bail After Nearly a Decade in Detention

Accra, Ghana – February 21, 2025

After nearly 10 years in detention, Gregory Afoko, a key suspect in the 2015 murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama, has been granted bail by the High Court in Accra.

The court set bail at GH₵500,000 with two sureties, marking a significant development in a long-running legal battle.

Afoko’s Trial and Legal Battles

Afoko was arrested in 2015 for allegedly conspiring with others to assassinate Adams Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his Bolgatanga home.

His trial, which commenced in 2019, concluded in 2023. However, the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict on both murder and conspiracy to commit murder charges. As a result, the court ordered a retrial, leading to his continued detention.

Afoko has previously applied for bail twice, but both requests were denied. On February 17, 2025, his legal team filed a fresh bail application, arguing that he should be released pending his retrial.

State Prosecution Continues

While Afoko’s bail is a victory for his defense team, the state prosecution is still ongoing. The High Court’s decision does not mean an end to the case, as the retrial process is yet to conclude.

Afoko’s release marks a turning point in a case that has been in the judicial system for nearly a decade, with many legal hurdles still ahead.
