OSP Confirms Ken Ofori-Atta Diagnosed With Cancer, Still Wanted for Questioning

ACCRA – June 2, 2025 — The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has confirmed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing medical treatment. Despite this development, Mr. Ofori-Atta remains a wanted person, the OSP announced at a press conference held Monday, June 2.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng revealed that the former Minister’s legal team submitted medical documentation indicating an “unexpected deterioration” in his health, along with confirmation of a recent cancer diagnosis.

In light of his condition, Mr. Ofori-Atta’s lawyers have proposed that he submit a caution statement virtually, invoking provisions under the Electronic Transactions Act.

However, Mr. Agyebeng cast doubt on the proposal, expressing concern it could be an attempt to evade accountability.

“Legal representation is no substitute for the personal attendance of a suspect in a criminal investigation,” the Special Prosecutor stated.

Still a Fugitive from Justice

Mr. Ofori-Atta was first declared a “fugitive from justice” in February 2025 for repeatedly failing to respond to OSP summons. He is under investigation for his alleged role in several high-profile corruption cases during his tenure as Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024.

These include:

  • The revenue assurance contract with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML),
  • Financial dealings surrounding the controversial National Cathedral project, and
  • A range of procurement and expenditure anomalies.

OSP Yet to Decide on Virtual Appearance

While acknowledging the former Minister’s health condition, the OSP has not yet decided whether it will accept the request for a virtual appearance. Investigations remain ongoing, and the OSP says it is committed to ensuring accountability regardless of a suspect’s status or position.
