GUTA President Urges Mahama Government to Avoid New Taxes in 2025 Budget

Accra, March 10, 2025 – The President of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA), Dr. Joseph Obeng, has appealed to the government not to introduce new taxes in the 2025 Budget, which is set to be presented by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on March 11, 2025.
Concerns Over Excessive Taxation
Dr. Obeng cautioned that excessive taxation could further strain businesses, urging the government to expand the tax net instead of increasing the tax burden on compliant traders.
🗣️ “We’re not expecting new taxes. But we will not be worried if the government expands the tax base to include those currently outside the tax net,” he stated.
Government’s Pledge on Tax Reforms
✅ The government has already promised to remove some levies, including the betting tax and e-levy.
✅ Dr. Obeng praised the finance minister’s consultation with traders, calling it a worthwhile and refreshing approach to policymaking.
“Engaging us before the budget is the best thing that could have happened. It gives me hope, and we’re very grateful,” he added.
As the nation awaits the 2025 budget presentation, traders are keen to see pro-business policies that ease their financial burden while ensuring fair taxation across all sectors.
