Western North Region, March 10, 2025 – A joint task force involving the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) of the Forestry Commission (FC) and 30 military personnel has carried out a major crackdown on illegal mining in the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve, located in the Enchi Forest District.
Seizures and Arrests
✅ March 9, 2025 – The task force raided Compartments 17 and 20 of the reserve, seizing 10 excavators and a bulldozer and arresting four individuals involved in illegal mining activities.
✅ March 4, 2025 – An earlier raid by the Forest Services Division (FSD) and the RRU forced 12 excavators out of the area, though no arrests were made due to the miners being armed and outnumbering the enforcement team.
Escalating Crackdown on Illegal Miners
🔹 March 6, 2025 – Acting on intelligence, the team returned to prevent miners from re-entering the reserve.
🔹 March 8, 2025 – A tip-off led to another operation, but the heavily armed miners refused to leave and declined to remove their excavators.
Government’s Commitment to Protecting Forest Reserves
The latest intensified enforcement efforts highlight the government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining, which remains a major threat to Ghana’s forests and natural ecosystems.
The seized equipment is being evacuated to the Enchi District Assembly premises, while a formal complaint has been lodged with the Enchi District Police Command to aid further investigations.
