Ashanti Region to Become Key Power Generation Hub – Energy Minister

Kumasi, Ghana – March 2025 – The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that the Ashanti Region is set to become a major power generation hub, with the completion of critical energy projects expected to produce approximately 700 megawatts of electricity.

Speaking during a tour of the region to assess power supply challenges, the minister inspected key energy facilities, including the Ameri Power Plant, Cenit, and ASKSA Energy Plants at the Awomaso Bulk Power Supply enclave.

Efforts to Stabilize Power Supply

Addressing the media, Jinapor reassured residents that the government is working to ensure a stable and reliable power supply.

“The supply situation has been stable, and we are able to export some excess amount of power. But there is still more work to be done. Beyond generating the power, you have to evacuate it, transmit it, and distribute it. We are working around the clock to address these challenges and ensure reliable power delivery.”

He also commended GRIDCo for completing the installation of a new transformer, which he described as critical to power stability in the region.

“Let me commend GRIDCo for completing this transformer. It is going to play a very significant role in power delivery. What we witnessed over the past two days had to do with switching from one transformer to another, which caused a few challenges. But let me assure the people of Kumasi that the issue has been resolved, and we look forward to improved power delivery.”

Boosting Energy Security

The announcement comes amid intermittent power cuts in Kumasi and surrounding areas, which have raised concerns among residents. The government’s commitment to expanding power generation and strengthening transmission infrastructure is seen as a key step toward long-term energy security in the region.
