Kumasi, March 24, 2025 – The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has formally apologized to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, following controversial remarks made by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), ADOI Alex King Nartey, in response to criticism over a recent fire outbreak in Adum, Kumasi.
Background of the Incident
A devastating fire erupted in the early hours of Friday, destroying over 5,000 shops in the busy commercial hub of Adum. The inferno raged for nearly two days, finally coming under control by Sunday morning, leaving behind massive losses.
Amid the crisis, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene confronted the fire service officials, expressing frustration over their perceived delayed response. His criticism led to a heated exchange when GNFS PRO Alex Nartey responded with the remark:
“Shouting doesn’t quench fire.”
The statement, which many deemed disrespectful, led the Minister to demand a public apology from the Fire Service.
GNFS Issues Apology
In a letter dated March 24, 2025, Acting Chief Fire Officer Daniella M. Ntow Sapong expressed regret over Nartey’s comments, describing them as “uncomplimentary” and acknowledging that they were inappropriate.
“We sincerely apologize for the remarks made by our PRO, which were not intended to undermine the Minister’s authority or concerns. Steps will be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.”
The GNFS also reassured the public and regional authorities of its commitment to improving fire response efforts, particularly in the Ashanti Region, and emphasized its willingness to work closely with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to strengthen fire safety measures.
As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, affected business owners have called for swift intervention to help them recover from the devastating loss.
