Accra, March 27, 2025 – Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has formally written to President John Dramani Mahama, requesting copies of petitions filed against her that seek her removal from office.
Her request follows the president’s decision to forward three petitions to the Council of State for advice, as required by constitutional provisions.
Call for Due Process
In her letter, Justice Torkonoo emphasized the need for due process and asked to be provided with copies of the petitions so she could appropriately respond.
📝 “I am by this letter humbly and respectfully asking His Excellency the President and eminent members of the Council of State to forward the petitions against me to me and allow me at least seven days after receipt of the same to provide my response to you, which response can then form part of the materials that you conduct the consultation anticipated under 146(6), before the possible setting up of a Committee of Inquiry under Article 146(7),” part of the letter read.
Background
📌 The petitions, whose details remain undisclosed, have sparked concerns over judicial independence.
📌 Critics, including Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, have warned against politically motivated attempts to remove the Chief Justice, citing potential long-term effects on Ghana’s judicial system.
📌 Former Council of State member, Dr. Nii Kotei Dzani, clarified that President Mahama’s role is limited to forwarding petitions, as the removal process is strictly constitutional.
As the matter unfolds, all eyes remain on the Council of State’s next steps and the potential formation of a Committee of Inquiry.
