
Accra, Ghana β March 29, 2025 β The Ghana Navy has launched an investigation into a suspected pirate attack on the Ghanaian-registered fishing vessel, MENGXIN 1, which occurred in Ghanaian waters on the evening of Thursday, March 27, 2025.
Details of the Attack
π Time & Location: The attack took place at 5:53 PM, when seven armed individuals boarded the vessel and fired warning shots.
π¨ Crew’s Response: Several crew members sought refuge in a safe area while the pirates took control of the vessel for nearly three hours.
π΅ What Was Taken? The pirates confiscated crew membersβ mobile phones and assembled them on deck before leaving.
π’ Missing Crew Members: After the pirates departed, the crew discovered that the Captain, Chief Mate, and Chief Engineerβall Chinese nationalsβwere missing and are suspected to have been kidnapped.
Investigation and Response
β The vessel has safely docked at the Tema Fishing Harbour, where Marine Police and Naval Intelligence personnel from the Eastern Naval Command have conducted initial interrogations.
π Regional Collaboration: The ECOWAS Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone F in Accra has alerted neighboring countries under the YaoundΓ© Architecture for maritime security to assist in locating the kidnappers.
π Official Statement:
Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, assured the public that intelligence agencies are actively working to locate and rescue the kidnapped crew members.
The Ghana Navy has reaffirmed its commitment to maritime security, working closely with regional and international partners to combat piracy and protect vessels operating in Ghanaian waters.
