Binduri MP Defends GHC150,000 Allocation, Calls It “Woefully Inadequate”

Accra, Ghana – March 30, 2025 – The Member of Parliament (MP) for Binduri, Issifu Mahmoud, has defended the GHC150,000 budgetary allocation, arguing that it is insufficient to address the growing demands within constituencies.
Parliamentary Budget Approval
📌 On March 29, 2025, Parliament approved a GHC250,000 allocation per MP through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to support education-related projects in their constituencies.
📌 Additionally, GHC150,000 was allocated to each MP to monitor the implementation of these projects.
Criticism and Justification
🔹 The decision has faced backlash, with critics questioning both the necessity and adequacy of the funds.
🔹 In an interview with Channel One Newsroom, MP Issifu Mahmoud argued that MPs face immense financial demands from their constituents, ranging from school fees to medical expenses and general welfare support.
🗣️ “They [critics] are right to some extent. But they can only be right if they don’t understand the nature of the job of a Member of Parliament in a constituency. Because this so-called GHC150,000 that is meant for us to do monitoring or whatever is woefully inadequate,” he said.
📌 He further revealed that senior MPs often spend more than GHC150,000 within weeks or months to meet the pressing needs of their constituents.
📢 The approved funds aim to enhance educational infrastructure and resources to improve learning conditions in various communities. However, the debate over MP funding allocations is expected to continue in the coming weeks.
