NLC Rules in Favor of Former NIA Boss in Employee Dismissal Case

Accra, Ghana – March 30, 2025 – The National Labour Commission (NLC) has ruled in favor of Professor Ken Attafuah, the former Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), in a case involving the dismissal of Martin Akowuah in 2023.

Background of the Case

πŸ“Œ Mr. Akowuah was dismissed for unlawfully altering working hours at the Madina District Office of the NIA without authorization.

πŸ“Œ He later filed a complaint with the NLC, arguing that his dismissal was unfair.

NLC’s Ruling

πŸ“œ After an investigation, the NLC, in a decision issued on March 14, 2025, upheld Professor Attafuah’s actions, ruling that the dismissal followed proper legal and procedural frameworks.

πŸ”Ή The Commission stated that the action was consistent with the Human Resource Management Policy Framework for Ghana’s Public Service and the NIA’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on registration.

Professor Attafuah’s Response

πŸ—£οΈ Reacting to the verdict, Professor Attafuah maintained that he had always upheld fairness and integrity in his leadership.

πŸ’¬ β€œMr. Martin Akowuah’s allegations that I treated him unfairly run contrary to my nature and everything I stand for as a human rights advocate. I believe I am fair to a fault, using my training as a lawyer to serve humanity with integrity,” he said.

Challenges of Institutional Leadership

⚠️ The former NIA boss also highlighted the difficulties of institutional leadership in Ghana, citing:
πŸ”Έ Excessive politicization
πŸ”Έ Misinformation and propaganda
πŸ”Έ Challenges in enforcing discipline and ethical governance

πŸ“’ β€œProviding effective institutional leadership is challenging in an environment where misinformation blurs clarity and suppresses truth. Thankfully, as in this case, truth stands, eventually,” he added.

The ruling brings finality to the dispute, reinforcing the importance of adherence to public service regulations.
