Accra, Ghana – March 30, 2025 – President John Dramani Mahama has issued a strong warning against individuals and entities that have illegally constructed buildings on wetlands, waterways, and Ramsar sites, vowing that such structures will be demolished without exception.
Addressing Illegal Land Encroachment
📍 Speaking at the 2025 National Eid-ul-Fitr celebration at Black Star Square, President Mahama emphasized the urgent need to tackle land encroachment, which has significantly contributed to flooding and environmental degradation across Ghana.
🗣️ “This reckless disregard for planning regulations and environmental safety is a major contributor to the devastating floods that continue to plague our communities,” President Mahama stated.
Crackdown on Illegal Constructions
🚧 The President reaffirmed his commitment to enforcing urban planning laws by demolishing all unauthorized structures that obstruct natural waterways.
🚨 He particularly criticized individuals who collude with traditional leaders to acquire and develop protected lands, including Ramsar sites.
📢 “Let me be clear, this must stop. Those structures will be pulled down, and we will not allow a few selfish individuals to endanger the lives and livelihoods of countless others. The law will be enforced, and those who flout it will face the consequences.”
