Minority in Parliament Raises Concerns Over Rising Drug Trafficking and Money Laundering Cases

Accra, Ghana – March 30, 2025 – The Minority in Parliament has expressed grave concerns over the rising cases of drug trafficking and money laundering in the country, barely three months after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) handed over power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to the Minority, two months after a raid on 12 containers of gold and cash at Sapeiman in Accra, National Security has failed to provide updates on the investigation, including the identities of those involved and the exact quantity of gold and money retrieved.
Calls for Transparency on Suspected Drug Cargo
Additionally, the Minority is demanding clarity on the status of two suspicious flights that landed at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in March 2025, reportedly carrying cocaine and cash into the country.
Addressing journalists, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, urged the government to uphold transparency in its fight against drug trafficking and financial crimes.
“We demand accountability from the National Security for the gold bars and cash retrieved and a clear explanation of what they intend to do with them. The Minority Caucus, acting responsibly, has waited two months for an update, yet no official communication has been made,” he stated.
Pirate Attack Linked to Lack of Naval Equipment
The Minority also linked the March 27, 2025, pirate attack on a Ghanaian-registered fishing vessel to the NDC MPs’ opposition to the procurement of two offshore patrol vessels during the previous administration.
“You will recall the Akufo-Addo government’s efforts to procure two offshore patrol vessels for the Ghana Navy in 2024. The NDC strongly opposed this plan in Parliament, leading to its termination,” Fordjour stated.
He warned that Ghana’s maritime security is now vulnerable, as pirates are aware of the Ghana Navy’s lack of offshore patrol vessels.
The Minority is calling for urgent action from the government to strengthen security measures, enhance maritime protection, and increase transparency in handling drug trafficking and money laundering investigations.
