Police Arrest 11 Suspects for Illegal Mining Along Bonsa River

Western Region, Ghana – April 1, 2025 – The Western Central Regional Police Command has arrested eleven individuals for engaging in illegal mining activities along the Bonsa River in the Western Region.

The suspects include seven Ghanaians and four Chinese nationals, who were apprehended on March 31, 2025, as part of sustained intelligence-led operations to curb illegal mining.

Arrested Suspects and Locations

According to the police, five of the suspects were arrested at a mining site in Bonsa:

  • Wei Qinwei
  • Yao Yongji
  • Nsoh Oto (alias Agologo)
  • Kwadwo George (alias Sergio)
  • Emmanuel Van (alias Atta)

The remaining six were captured at Wassa Agona:

  • Nuang Shichuan
  • Huang Xinbao
  • Douglas Ayambilla
  • Elvis Aborta
  • Michael Tettey Komlorm
  • Ibrahim Dauda

Legal Proceedings and Police Assurance

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before the court soon.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public—especially residents of the Western Central Region—of its commitment to combating illegal mining and maintaining law and order.

Illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” has been a persistent challenge in Ghana, leading to environmental destruction, water pollution, and loss of livelihoods.

Authorities have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining and pledged to intensify enforcement efforts.
