Kumasi, Ghana – April 9, 2025 – The National Investigations Bureau (NIB) has launched an investigation into individuals allegedly using the names of government officials to extort money from small-scale miners.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Head of the Ashanti Regional Security Council, confirmed that multiple government officials have reported instances of their names being misused for extortion. Some of these cases have been referred to the NIB for further investigation and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Government’s Response
🛑 Influence peddling will not be tolerated, Dr. Amoakohene stressed, urging miners to report any fraudulent demands.
🔍 The issue surfaced during a meeting between the Concerned National Small-Scale Miners Association and the Ashanti Regional Minister, where miners raised concerns about individuals claiming to be fighting illegal mining but instead demanding bribes.
💬 “I receive concerns from people in higher positions about individuals using their names. I’ve referred some of these cases to the NIB to investigate and ensure the perpetrators are caught,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.
Crackdown on Illegal Mining (Galamsey)
🚨 The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council and a security task force have intensified efforts to reclaim forests and water bodies from illegal mining operations.
📌 The government remains firm in its fight against illegal mining, with strict presidential directives banning mining in forests, near roadsides, and close to water bodies.
🗣️ Dr. Amoakohene emphasized: “The President has made it clear: no mining in forests, no mining near roadsides or water bodies. We are ready to provide further support to ensure that we do what is right.”
