📍 Accra, Ghana – April 10, 2025 – The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has suspended its planned operation to arrest Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, following an appeal by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
🔹 According to Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, the National Coordinator for the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Afenyo-Markin requested that National Security allow him to personally present Rev. Fordjour at the NIB office by 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 11. Authorities granted this request, leading to the suspension of the operation.
Allegations & Arrest Attempt
🏛️ The arrest attempt stemmed from allegations made by Rev. Fordjour regarding two suspicious flights that landed at Kotoka International Airport under circumstances suggesting drug trafficking and money laundering.
🛑 Following these claims, NIB operatives attempted to detain him at his residence, but the Minority Leader’s intervention led to a temporary halt in the operation.
Vanderpuye Criticizes Minority MPs
🚨 Vanderpuye criticized the actions of some Minority MPs, describing their response as unnecessary and theatrical.
💬 “What happened yesterday was a drama. The Minority Leader had an agreement with government officials that he would voluntarily present any caucus member when needed. If not for his plea, they would have spent the night in his house, holding a vigil to prevent National Security from executing their mandate,” he remarked.
Legal & Political Implications
⚖️ Vanderpuye clarified that MPs are not immune to arrest, but parliamentary privileges require such actions to be communicated through the Speaker of Parliament.
🔍 The suspension of the operation has raised concerns over potential political intimidation and the broader implications for opposition figures speaking on sensitive national issues.
