ECG, GRIDCo Upgrade Power Capacity in Ashanti Region to Meet Growing Demand

Kumasi, Ghana – February 14, 2025

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have signed a strategic agreement to enhance electricity supply capacity in the Ashanti Region, addressing the increasing power demand in the area.

As part of the initiative, the existing 66MVA transformer at the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point (BSP) will be upgraded to a 145MVA power transformer. This upgrade is expected to boost installed capacity significantly, ensuring a more stable electricity supply, particularly during peak hours between 7 PM and 11 PM.

Project Significance

Prior to the upgrade, the 66MVA transformer at the Anwomaso BSP was frequently overloaded, leading to power instability. The new 145MVA capacity is projected to:

Improve supply reliability across the region
Stabilize electricity distribution in Kumasi and surrounding areas
Support economic growth by accommodating rising demand

Speaking to the media, Engineer Peter Kofi Fletcher emphasized the importance of the upgrade in meeting both current and future power needs.

“We are upgrading a transformer from 66MVA to 145MVA, which will significantly increase electricity capacity in Kumasi. The existing capacity is constrained, and with the city’s rapid development, this upgrade is necessary,” he stated.

Call for Support

Engineer Fletcher also:

🔹 Urged road and building contractors to consult ECG before starting construction due to underground power cables
🔹 Encouraged customers to pay their electricity bills to support ongoing repairs and expansion projects

This move by ECG and GRIDCo marks a major step toward strengthening Ghana’s power infrastructure and ensuring sustainable electricity supply for businesses and households in the Ashanti Region.
