π Bawku, Ghana β April 14, 2025 β Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Upper East Regional Minister, has pushed back against mounting calls for the declaration of a state of emergency in Bawku, following renewed clashes that left multiple people dead and injured last week.
The latest violence erupted on Thursday, April 10, in a confrontation between security forces and local youth, reportedly claiming several lives and leaving scores injured. The situation intensified after the private residence of Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, was allegedly set ablaze amid the unrest.
Minister Rejects Emergency Rule
In an interview, Minister Akamugri dismissed the notion of invoking a state of emergency, stating that the situationβthough seriousβdoes not meet the criteria for such a drastic intervention.
βIt has been referred to an eminent chief to handle,β he said, referencing the mediation efforts. βIt is not like sporadic where every day they are fighting each other. It is an instance that sparks up issues and it is brought under control. It is not an all-war situation. So, why will [we] declare a state of emergency?β
His remarks come in the wake of rising pressure from community leaders, civil society groups, and concerned citizens, who believe that only a decisive security response can quell the recurring instability in the area.
Background to the Crisis
Bawku has been a flashpoint of ethnic and political tension for years, with periodic outbreaks of violence often resulting in fatalities, destruction of property, and mass displacement. The most recent events have renewed national attention, with Parliament and the Presidency commenting on the issue in recent days.
While President John Mahama has announced that the Asantehene-led mediation process will resume soon, others believe more immediate security measures are necessary to protect lives and restore lasting calm.
