ACCRA, April 17, 2025 — The Teshie Nungua District Court ‘2’ has once again adjourned the case involving the fatal shooting of Lawrencia Naa Borley Nelson, affectionately known as Naa Gamu, to May 7, 2025, following a prosecution request for more time to complete investigations and obtain a crucial ballistic report.
This latest development follows an earlier adjournment on March 26, which was necessitated by the absence of the presiding judge. Prosecutors say the ballistic report is vital to building their case against the suspect.
In a related legal decision, the Accra High Court on April 9 dismissed a bail application filed by the legal team representing Samuel Adjei, the prime suspect in the case. Adjei has been charged with unlawful possession of firearms and murder, though his plea is yet to be formally taken.
Police sources confirm that they are in the process of preparing a duplicate docket to be submitted to the Attorney General’s Department for legal advice, signalling that the case may soon progress to the next phase.
Samuel Adjei’s arrest followed the tragic death of Naa Gamu, the queen mother of the Ga Adangme Muslim Union, who was struck in the thigh by a musket allegedly fired during traditional rites at her enstoolment ceremony in Nungua. The injury proved fatal.
The incident has sparked widespread public outcry, with many calling for a thorough review of traditional practices involving firearms, especially in public ceremonies.
The court’s next sitting on May 7 is expected to provide further clarity on the prosecution’s direction and whether formal charges will be confirmed following advice from the Attorney General.
