NPP Deputy National Organiser Was Assaulted During Ablekuma North Rerun Chaos

The Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, was brutally assaulted at the St. Peter’s Polling Station in Odorkor, Ablekuma North, during Friday’s chaotic parliamentary rerun.

The attack occurred when a group of unidentified individuals stormed the polling station, targeting several NPP members and sparking widespread panic among voters and electoral officials.

A viral video circulating on social media shows Asamoah being violently beaten by individuals alleged to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC). In the footage, Asamoah attempts to flee the scene but is quickly overpowered, pinned to the ground, and kicked and punched repeatedly by the assailants.

The brutality of the attack brought voting to a sudden halt at the polling station, with security personnel scrambling to restore order.

Multiple Targets in Violent Attack

Asamoah was not the only target. The NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, and former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson were also reportedly physically assaulted during the melee, although details of their injuries remain unclear.

Witnesses described the incident as a premeditated act of political violence, with some claiming that the attackers arrived in a coordinated fashion to disrupt the polling process.

Growing Concerns Over Electoral Violence

The Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, held on July 11, 2025, was already under intense scrutiny following months of legal disputes and political tension between the NPP and NDC. The election was expected to bring closure to unresolved issues from the December 2024 general elections.

However, the rerun has instead been marred by widespread reports of intimidation, violence, and chaos, raising serious concerns about the safety of political actors and the credibility of the process.

The Ghana Police Service has yet to release an official statement on the attack against Asamoah or the broader security lapses reported during the vote.
