ACCRA, April 17, 2025 — The National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has strongly criticized the Minority in Parliament for what he described as their hasty and politically motivated reaction to the ongoing petition against the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo.
His comments followed the Minority’s recent appeal to religious and traditional leaders to intervene and persuade President John Dramani Mahama to suspend the constitutional process seeking the Chief Justice’s removal.
The Minority described the petition as “baseless” and lacking constitutional merit. However, Vanderpuye dismissed these claims as premature and politically calculated.
“I think that they are too much in haste to be relevant, because of their micro nature. They are too much in haste to make themselves heard,” he said during an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily program on Thursday.
“Let the Constitutional Process Run Its Course”
Vanderpuye emphasized the importance of allowing Ghana’s constitutional mechanisms to function without external interference, particularly from political actors.
“I will tell them to allow the constitutional process to engage itself fully, and when it has run its full toll, then we shall all know whether Chief Justice Torkornoo has a case or not.”
Respect for CJ, But Questions Raised
Despite voicing respect for the Chief Justice, Vanderpuye hinted at concerns raised within the judicial community regarding her conduct and public perception.
“She is not as saintly as some of us have perceived her to be. I will not sit here and prejudge her, but… all that glitters is not gold.”
He cited unnamed sources within the judiciary who reportedly shared troubling accounts about the Chief Justice’s behavior, though he acknowledged the importance of due process and refrained from drawing conclusions.
Minority’s Predictability and Political Strategy
Vanderpuye also accused the Minority of acting in ways that had already been anticipated by the government.
“What I want them to understand is that as soon as they start thinking, we have already thought about the steps they will take. Because they are very predictable and so they allow you to determine what action they will take in every instant.”
The petition against Chief Justice Torkornoo continues to attract widespread national attention, sparking debates on judicial independence, executive oversight, and partisan interference in constitutional matters.
