TEMA, April 17, 2025 — The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Tema Regional Command has begun strategic talks with the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to enhance the functionality, accessibility, and reliability of fire hydrants across the region.
Led by Regional Fire Commander ACFO II Patrick Sallah and the Regional Operations Officer, the GNFS team paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Samuel Ason, Regional Chief Manager of GWCL, in a bid to strengthen inter-agency collaboration for effective emergency response.
Key Issues Addressed
The meeting focused on several urgent concerns, including:
- Recommissioning buried or inactive hydrants
- Replacing faulty couplings that do not meet GNFS operational standards
- Improving water pressure in hydrants for optimal firefighting performance
Commander Sallah emphasized the need to ensure all fire hydrants are easily accessible during emergencies, especially in high-risk areas like Tema New-Town, which currently lacks adequate hydrant infrastructure.
Hydrant Infrastructure in Crisis
According to GNFS national statistics, only 797 of the country’s 1,832 fire hydrants are operational, underscoring a critical gap in fire preparedness and response. This partnership seeks to drastically improve those numbers, starting with the Tema Region.
Joint Task Force Formed
To address these challenges, GNFS and GWCL have agreed to establish a joint task force tasked with:
- Conducting a full audit of hydrant infrastructure
- Rehabilitating faulty units
- Recommending strategic locations for new hydrant installations
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to working together to safeguard lives and property, with a shared vision of strengthening emergency services and reducing fire-related disasters in the region.
