KUMASI, April 18, 2025 — The ambitious Heal Komfo Anokye Project, spearheaded by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is making solid headway into its second phase, following the successful refurbishment and handover of the A4 and A5 wards at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The $10 million initiative is aimed at restoring the aging 70-year-old facility to a modern and dignified standard, addressing both infrastructure and patient care needs. The newly upgraded wards are already in use by inpatients, marking a key milestone in the larger hospital renovation project.
Speaking on Joy FM, Mr. Kwame Frimpong, KATH’s Public Relations Officer, emphasized the significance of the work and outlined the next steps.
“A key component of the project is also a maintenance fund. The project managers decided that at least a tenth of the total amount should be set aside for maintenance. This ensures that we don’t fall back into the cycle of neglect that led to the deterioration of the blocks,” he said.
Mr. Frimpong revealed that the entire A block, consisting of five wards, is being prioritized. With A4, A5, and A3 completed, the project will move on to A2 and A1, after which focus will shift sequentially to B, C, and D blocks.
He described the renovation as a “comprehensive modernisation” rather than a cosmetic upgrade. Improvements include:
- Doubling or tripling washroom facilities to meet current patient loads.
- Installation of mosquito-proof netting with new window systems.
- Complete oxygen supply lines to ensure every bed has direct access to oxygen.
“This facility was constructed 70 years ago. The number of patients then was far less than we see now, but the infrastructure has not changed. We are correcting that,” he stated.
Unfortunately, a fundraising and awards dinner meant to support the next phase of the project has been postponed. Mr. Frimpong attributed the delay to “circumstances beyond the control of organisers” and apologized to affected participants. A new date will be announced in collaboration with the Manhyia Palace.
Despite the postponement, the hospital remains committed to the project’s success and is optimistic about continuing improvements, thanks to both public and private support.
The Heal Komfo Anokye Project stands as a beacon of hope for the future of healthcare in the Ashanti Region and across Ghana.
