Speaker Bagbin Condemns Insult Against Dr. Zanetor Rawlings in Parliament

Accra, March 4, 2025 – The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has strongly condemned offensive remarks directed at Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Korle-Klottey, during parliamentary proceedings on February 4, 2025.

During the session, an unidentified male voice was heard shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down! Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” The outburst occurred while Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin was addressing the House, calling for calm amid heated debates on the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah.

Tensions Over JB Danquah’s Legacy

The controversy stemmed from a debate in which Tamale Central MP, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, challenged what he described as exaggerated praises from the Minority regarding JB Danquah’s contributions to Ghana’s history. The Speaker at the time, Andrew Asiamah, intervened by restricting contributions to only parliamentary leadership, effectively silencing other MPs.

Speaker Bagbin Demands Accountability

In a formal communication during parliamentary proceedings on March 3, 2025, Speaker Bagbin issued a stern rebuke, describing the comments as “unwarranted, unjustified, and deeply offensive.”

📌 Key Actions by Speaker Bagbin:

  • Issued a public apology to Dr. Zanetor Rawlings and her family, including former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings.
  • Gave the culprit a one-week ultimatum to come forward or face disciplinary consequences.
  • Described the remarks as dishonourable, emphasizing that such conduct is unbefitting of a sitting MP.

“I extend my deepest apologies to Hon. Zanetor Rawlings, H.E. Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, the family, the chiefs, and all the good people of Anlo and Anlo land,” Speaker Bagbin stated.

Growing Calls for Decorum in Parliament

The incident has reignited calls for discipline and decorum in Parliament, as tensions over Ghana’s political history continue to shape debates in the House.
