Accra, March 25, 2025 – Forty former public sector employees have taken legal action against the government, claiming their dismissals were unlawful and politically motivated.
The affected workers, hired in 2024, argue that their terminations violated constitutional provisions and due process.
Their dismissals followed a directive from Chief of Staff Julius Debrah on February 10, 2025, ordering all public institutions to revoke appointments made after December 7, 2024—the date of Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections. The directive claimed these late appointments under the previous NPP administration were irregular.
Legal Challenge and Demands
Represented by Dame and Partners, the plaintiffs have filed their lawsuit against the Attorney General and six state agencies, including:
- Ghana Revenue Authority
- National Lottery Authority
- Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority
- Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority
- Ghana Shippers Council
- National Health Insurance Authority
The dismissed workers are demanding:
- A court ruling declaring their dismissals unlawful.
- Reinstatement and compensation for hardship.
- A declaration that the Chief of Staff’s directive was unconstitutional.
- An order barring future politically motivated dismissals.
Political Reactions
Tafo MP Ekow Vincent Assafuah has strongly condemned the dismissals, describing them as blatantly political. He estimates that at least 5,000 public servants have been affected under the Mahama administration.
“These individuals went through the right recruitment processes. Their dismissals are purely political, and it is unacceptable. But we believe in the rule of law, and I have no doubt that justice will be served,” Assafuah stated.
The lawsuit could set a major legal precedent regarding executive power over public service appointments. The government has yet to officially respond to the case.
