ACCRA, Ghana – April 24, 2025 — President John Dramani Mahama has offered public reassurance over the health of Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, confirming that she is recovering well and remains in good spirits following a recent period of medical attention.
Speaking at the official launch of the government’s nationwide sanitary pad distribution initiative, President Mahama addressed concerns about the Vice President’s absence from the event and gave an update on her condition.
“I spoke to her yesterday and I told her we were going to miss her at this event because this is a programme that is very dear to her,” the President said.
“She said I should say hello to all of you and to say she is recuperating and catching a bit of rest. She is very well and soon she will join us to continue to prosecute the reset agenda.”
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reportedly fell ill on March 28, 2025, and was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) the following day for medical evaluation. Her health sparked public concern due to her pivotal role in the current administration.
A March 30 statement from the Office of the President confirmed she was in stable condition and receiving the necessary care. Doctors recommended additional medical evaluations abroad, leading the Vice President to commence a three-week medical leave on April 7, 2025.
According to Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the move is purely precautionary, aimed at ensuring a complete and safe recovery.
Her absence comes as the government rolls out major initiatives like the sanitary pad programme—key to the broader “reset agenda”—in which she plays a significant leadership role. Her expected return in the coming weeks is anticipated to reinvigorate momentum behind these flagship policies.
