NEW JEJETI, Ghana – April 28, 2025 — A major disaster was narrowly averted on the Accra-Kumasi highway on Monday after a fully loaded fuel tanker with registration number GT 6870-24 caught fire near New Jejeti.

The tanker, reportedly carrying 54,000 litres of fuel, lost balance and overturned, triggering a fire that could have led to widespread devastation. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear, but eyewitnesses say the vehicle toppled, igniting the blaze.

The Anyinam Fire Station responded swiftly to distress calls and arrived at the scene just in time to contain the situation. Firefighters deployed rapid cooling techniques and maintained close surveillance of the tanker to prevent an explosion.
Thanks to their quick and coordinated action, the flames were brought under control before the situation escalated, averting a potential catastrophe and ensuring the safety of residents and commuters.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has been widely commended for their heroic efforts, which prevented loss of lives and safeguarded a key national highway from destruction.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the fire and have advised caution on the roads, especially for vehicles transporting hazardous materials.
