Guan MP Proposes Repurposing Stalled National Cathedral into Apartments for Public Sector Workers

ACCRA, Ghana – April 29, 2025 — The Member of Parliament for Guan, Fred Kwesi Agbenyo, has proposed a bold alternative for the controversial and unfinished National Cathedral project: convert it into residential apartments for public sector workers.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Agbenyo criticized the previous government’s handling of the project, highlighting the $58 million in public funds already spent without meaningful progress. He emphasized the need for a practical and economically beneficial solution to the stalled development, which has become a symbol of public frustration and mismanagement.

“The investment that they made in the so-called cathedral. $58 million has gone down the drain. I don’t know what we are going to do with that today. I don’t know how we are going to get that project completed,” he lamented.

Agbenyo urged President John Dramani Mahama to explore public-private partnerships to repurpose the site into housing facilities, especially for essential workers.

“My advice on this show to President Mahama is that [let] us get some investors and let us convert that whole place into some beautiful apartment for workers. The Ridge Hospital staff can stay there, and people who work in the ministry can also stay there.”

His comments follow former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s admission during the NPP’s national Thank You Tour that the National Cathedral project contributed to the party’s 2024 electoral defeat, citing public anger over its execution and cost.

Agbenyo’s suggestion has added fresh momentum to the national debate over the future of the cathedral, which has faced ongoing scrutiny over cost overruns, lack of transparency, and shifting national priorities.

The conversation now shifts to whether the Mahama administration will heed the call to convert the abandoned monument into a resource that could help alleviate Ghana’s housing crisis, particularly for public sector employees.
