The Ghana Police Service, in a coordinated operation with the National Signals Bureau (NSB) and the Nigeria Police Force, has successfully rescued two kidnapped Ghanaian women whose ordeal shocked the nation after a viral video emerged showing them being abused in captivity.
The rescue mission, described as a cross-border success, led to the arrest of eight suspects in both Ghana and Nigeria. The suspects were apprehended from multiple hideouts following a seamless collaborative effort by the involved law enforcement agencies.
A statement from the Ghana Police Service confirmed the rescue and arrests, assuring the public that detailed updates will be provided as investigations continue.
“The Ghana Police Service extends its heartfelt gratitude to the National Signals Bureau and the Nigeria Police Force for their invaluable support and cooperation in both the rescue and arrest operations,” the statement said.
Background to the abduction
One of the victims, Ama Serwaa Konadu, a 39-year-old popular hairdresser and event decorator from Asiakwa in the Eastern Region, was abducted on Tuesday, April 22, while on her way to work.
A day after her abduction, disturbing nude videos were shared with her family using her own phone. In the footage, she was assaulted with a machete while the captors demanded a GH₵500,000 ransom, claiming she was being held in Nigeria.
Her family immediately filed a complaint with the Ghana Police Service and shared the graphic videos with law enforcement to aid in their investigations.
Thanks to swift action and international cooperation, the victims are now safe and receiving care. Authorities have reassured the public of their continued commitment to fighting kidnapping and cross-border crime.
