Suaman, May 6, 2025 — In a renewed crackdown on illegal mining, the Suaman District Assembly, in collaboration with security agencies, has destroyed four changfangs and various mining equipment used for galamsey operations on the River Sui.
The operation, spearheaded by District Chief Executive Vasco Obour, targeted illegal miners operating within the river’s course. According to reports, the miners fled upon detecting the approaching task force, abandoning locally constructed boats, changfangs, and other machinery at the site.

In line with efforts to halt further environmental degradation, the task force promptly set the equipment ablaze, ensuring it could no longer be used for destructive mining activities.
DCE Obour, addressing the media after the raid, revealed that intelligence gathering and community engagement were crucial in tracking and locating the illegal operations. He emphasized the assembly’s commitment to work closely with the District Security Council (DISEC) and local stakeholders to implement sustainable strategies aimed at completely ending illegal mining on water bodies in the area.
The operation marks a significant step in enforcing the government’s zero-tolerance policy on illegal mining and protecting vital water resources in the Western North Region.
