Tension Erupts at LaDMA as President’s MCE Nominee Rejected Over Inexperience Concerns

Accra, May 6, 2025 — Tensions flared at the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) on Monday after Assembly Members voted to reject Alfredos Nii Anyetei, the President’s nominee for the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
In the confirmation vote, only 5 members supported the nominee, while 9 voted against, resulting in his disapproval. The outcome triggered protests from supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), many of whom expressed anger and disappointment over the nomination process.
Chanting revolutionary songs, the demonstrators cited Mr. Anyetei’s age and perceived lack of experience as key reasons for their disapproval, accusing government officials of imposing a candidate without proper grassroots consultation. The protests grew so intense that they disrupted official proceedings at the assembly grounds.
Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, who represented President John Mahama at the confirmation ceremony, acknowledged the unrest.
“We have noted the concerns raised, and as a government, we will work to resolve the issues,” she assured the assembly and the public.
Sources close to the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) indicate that the government had hoped for a smooth confirmation, but internal divisions within the NDC over the nominee’s profile undermined those plans.
As it stands, the MCE position for La Dadekotopon remains vacant, and the government is expected to engage further with party members and local stakeholders before making a new nomination.
“We will not accept a leader imposed on us without proper consultation,” a protester told the media.
