Justice Atuguba Blasts NPP Over Protest Against CJ Suspension: “Pure Hypocrisy”

Accra, May 7, 2025Retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he described as a hypocritical stance regarding the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

His comments come on the heels of a major protest organized by the NPP and its allies on May 5 in Accra, demanding the immediate reinstatement of the suspended Chief Justice. Protesters labeled the action by President John Dramani Mahama as unconstitutional and politically driven, warning that it endangers the independence of the judiciary.

But in an interview with Joy News, Justice Atuguba dismissed the NPP’s position, pointing to past conduct during its tenure in office.

“How were they when they were in office? How did they perform? Acting transparently in the interest of the people — did they do that? What?!” the retired judge asked pointedly.

He further condemned the selective concern for judicial independence, highlighting the public distrust that plagued the judiciary during the NPP’s administration.

“Before the elections, it was common parlance on social media where the Supreme Court was being described as ‘unanimous FC.’ Was it President Mahama who was doing that?” he asked rhetorically.
“They were in office; what steps did they take?”

Justice Atuguba warned that the exclusion of public interest in political discourse is a dangerous trend in Ghana’s democratic development.

His comments add a new layer of tension to the ongoing legal and political battle surrounding the Chief Justice’s suspension, which followed petitions from private citizens and civic groups alleging misconduct.
