GACL Reclaims Prime Airport Lands from McDan Group After Court Victory

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has successfully repossessed over 16 acres of prime airport land from the McDan Group of Companies, following a decisive ruling by an Accra High Court in its favour.

Delivered on May 6, 2025, the judgment grants GACL full re-entry and possession of two significant land parcels—measuring approximately 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres—located adjacent to and opposite Action Chapel International, near Kotoka International Airport. These lands were held since 2012 by McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, both subsidiaries of the McDan Group.

The legal tussle began in February 2025 when GACL filed a writ and statement of claim citing breaches of land lease agreements and unpaid ground rents. The authority demanded the recovery of $26,296 in accrued rent and a perpetual injunction to restrain the companies from further use of the lands.

The court granted a summary judgment, ruling that the defendants had no valid defense, and awarded all requested reliefs. McDan’s entities were further ordered to pay GH¢50,000 in legal costs.

This ruling comes months after McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport were suspended over debt issues in December 2024. While those debts were later settled, the land dispute remained unresolved until this court action.

GACL has hailed the judgment as a major win for public asset protection. “The repossession of these lands not only safeguards millions of dollars’ worth of state assets but also reinforces our commitment to accountability and lawful management of public property,” a company source remarked.

The litigation success is credited to the collaborative efforts of GACL’s Legal Department and the leadership of Managing Director Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, who spearheaded the asset recovery initiative.

GACL is now expected to explore aviation-related projects or strategic partnerships to utilize the reclaimed lands, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance airport infrastructure and boost revenue.
