Chancellor of the Kumasi Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Felix Baffour Gyaewu, has voiced optimism about the future of the Roman Catholic Church under the newly elected pontiff, Pope Leo XIV.
His remarks come following the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the new Pope after a landmark conclave in Vatican City. Upon his election, the new Pope adopted the name Leo XIV, marking the beginning of what many hope will be a transformative papacy.
In an interview with Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, May 8, Fr. Baffour Gyaewu said the Pope’s deep-rooted experience as a missionary will significantly influence his leadership.
“This particular Pope has been a missionary, and as a missionary, we envisage that he is going to use that experience that he has gained in his work as a missionary to lead the Church,” he noted.
He further emphasized that Pope Leo XIV is expected to prioritize evangelism and global outreach. According to him, the Catholic Church under the new Pope will be more outward-looking and engaged with the world.
“Meaning that we are expecting a Church which is not enclosed in the upper room, on its own shelf, but ready to go out to look for the lost. A Church ready to be with the people and speak for the people, and assist the people,” Fr. Baffour Gyaewu added.
He expressed confidence that Pope Leo XIV’s missionary perspective will renew the Church’s commitment to being a voice for the voiceless and a guiding light for Catholics across the globe.
