The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly denied claims that it received funding from the National Signals Bureau (NSB) in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, calling the allegations “baseless” and politically motivated.
This follows the circulation of a memo allegedly authored by former NSB Director, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, and addressed to the National Security Coordinator. In it, Adu-Boahene is reported to have claimed that more than GH¢8 million was distributed to some opposition parties for the procurement of election collation equipment and logistics. He also argued that the GH¢49 million he is accused of misappropriating was actually used to fund covert national security operations.
Though the NDC was not specifically named in the memo, the party moved swiftly to distance itself from the controversy, insisting that it did not benefit from any such financial support.
In an interview with Joy News on Friday, May 9, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, categorically rejected any suggestion that the party received state funds, describing the allegations as illogical and unfounded.
“My opponent would give me resources to defeat him in an election? Does that make sense?” Dr. Tanko questioned. “I can speak on authority—it’s not possible at all. These guys are just clutching at straws. It won’t help them.”
He further suggested that those mentioned in the memo had previously aligned themselves with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) during political engagements such as the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings. “When we were in IPAC, anytime the NDC opposed the EC and NPP, those parties sided with them,” he noted.
Describing the matter as a distraction from the real issues surrounding the misappropriation charges facing Adu-Boahene, Dr. Tanko encouraged the former NSB boss to consider a plea deal. “Otherwise, he could be looking at 25 years,” he said.
The NDC also issued a call for transparency and accountability in the use of state funds, reaffirming its commitment to lawful and independently financed political activities.
