Former NSB Boss May Reveal Sensitive Security Info in Legal Defence – Lawyer Warns

Accra, May 13, 2025 – Lawyer for embattled former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss Kwabena Adu-Boahene, Samuel Atta Akyea, has raised concerns that his client may be forced to reveal classified national security information in court as part of his defence strategy.
Speaking to journalists outside the courtroom today, Atta Akyea cautioned that due to the nature of the charges, which include stealing, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state, Adu-Boahene may have no option but to present a full and robust defence—one that could touch on sensitive national security operations.
“The way national security matters are being raised, he should come to terms with it… He was not saying that he is afraid to defend himself, but when push comes to shove, he has to defend himself—even if that means delving into classified areas,” the lawyer explained.
Atta Akyea further warned of potential contradictions should the state accuse his client and later object to the disclosure of sensitive material.
“Someone will ask why a national intelligence officer is trying to bring national security matters into the public domain when he has sworn an oath,” he said, suggesting the case could test the balance between national security and legal transparency.
Meanwhile, despite the expiration of a court-ordered seven-day remand period, Adu-Boahene remains in custody. The court initially ordered his detention on Friday, May 2, over witness tampering allegations, but Atta Akyea told the court today that his client was rearrested on a separate charge once that remand order lapsed.
The situation is raising fresh legal questions about the handling of high-level security personnel in criminal investigations and could develop into a complex courtroom battle involving Ghana’s national interests.
