Presidential Committee Begins Hearings on Petitions Against Chief Justice Torkornoo

Accra, May 15, 2025 – The five-member committee appointed by President John Dramani Mahama to investigate misconduct petitions against Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo has officially begun its hearings today. The committee, established under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang. Its formation followed the President’s determination—after consulting the Council of State—that a prima facie case had been made against the Chief Justice.Other distinguished members of the committee include:
- Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, Supreme Court Judge
- Daniel Yaw Domelevo, former Auditor-General
- Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, Ghana Armed Forces
- Professor James Sefah Dzisah, Associate Professor, University of Ghana
The committee is expected to meet three times weekly and will submit a detailed report and recommendations to the President upon completion of its work.
Chief Justice Torkornoo, who is currently on suspension, faces five separate petitions alleging various forms of misconduct. President Mahama’s directive to form the committee and suspend the Chief Justice follows mounting pressure for transparency and accountability at the highest levels of the judiciary.
This investigation is seen as a pivotal moment in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to uphold judicial integrity and reinforce public trust in national institutions.
