GIRSAL Targets $30 Million from Chilli Pepper Exports Within Three Years

Accra, May 16, 2025 – The Ghana Incentive-Based Risk-Sharing System for Agricultural Lending Project (GIRSAL) has projected that Ghana could earn over $30 million in revenue from chilli pepper exports over the next three years, under a new export-oriented farming initiative.

The project, aimed at training farmers to cultivate 30 hectares of chilli peppers, is designed to boost Ghana’s non-traditional exports and align with the government’s accelerated export development strategy.

Speaking at a press briefing, Samuel Yeboah, Chief Operating Officer of GIRSAL, said the first phase alone is expected to generate $3 million in export revenue for the country.

“These farmers who are taking part in this project in the first place will have their capacities built. They will learn how to produce chilies under safe conditions more efficiently to be able to develop and scale up their production to the highest level,” he said.

GIRSAL’s initiative focuses on ensuring that farmers meet international quality and safety standards to access high-value export markets. The project is being rolled out in collaboration with relevant government agencies to facilitate compliance and expansion.

“We hope that in the next three years, we should be getting over $20–30 million from chilli exports alone into the country,” Yeboah added.

The move is seen as a strategic step to diversify Ghana’s agricultural exports and boost foreign exchange earnings, while also creating economic opportunities for smallholder farmers through value chain integration and training.
