AMA Launches Major Decongestion Drive in Accra’s CBD

Accra, May 20, 2025 – The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has embarked on a renewed decongestion exercise aimed at removing street traders and unauthorized structures from the Central Business District (CBD) in a bid to restore order, enhance sanitation, and ensure pedestrian safety.
In the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, AMA’s task forces, backed by the Ghana Police Service, stormed parts of the CBD to dismantle makeshift stalls, remove unauthorised kiosks, and evict street vendors who had taken over pavements and roadsides.
Key Areas Targeted
The first phase of the operation is focused on strategic areas around the AMA Head Office, including:
- Kinbu Road to Railways
- ECG Junction to King Tackie Tawiah Statue
- Opera Square through to Adabraka
According to AMA officials, these locations have been severely encroached upon, resulting in choked streets, blocked walkways, and mounting sanitation concerns.
“This exercise is part of our commitment to enforce city bylaws and reclaim the CBD for safe use by both vehicles and pedestrians,” an AMA official stated.
Traders React
While some commuters welcomed the move, many traders expressed frustration, citing a lack of alternative trading spaces and the potential impact on their livelihoods.
However, AMA insists that several prior notices were issued and that the exercise is part of broader plans to reorganise urban trading, relocate traders to designated markets, and beautify the capital.
Way Forward
The AMA has promised to maintain consistency in enforcement and called for public cooperation as it works to create a cleaner, safer, and more functional city centre.
