Dr. Joshua Zaato Backs Chief Justice Torkornoo’s Legal Fight, Calls It a Lesson in Rule of Law

Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Political Science Department, has expressed strong support for suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s decision to legally contest what he describes as an attempt to remove her from office without due process. Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, May 22, Dr. Zaato said the ongoing case presents a significant opportunity for national introspection on issues of judicial accountability and the rule of law. “I am happy that the Chief Justice is fighting to the end, and I am happy this is happening in the open for all to see. At the end of the day, I hope we learn something valuable as a country,” he stated.
He further noted that Chief Justice Torkornoo’s insistence on pursuing justice through the legal system is commendable, especially in a political environment where institutions are often weakened by external interference. “What makes me even more satisfied is that the Chief Justice has not allowed herself to be an easy target; she’s fighting back with the law, and that’s commendable,” he added.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is currently on suspension following a directive by President John Mahama issued under Article 146 of the Constitution. She is facing three separate petitions calling for her removal from office. In response, she has petitioned the Supreme Court to disqualify two members of the committee investigating her conduct — Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu — over concerns of bias.
Her petition also includes former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah as respondents. Justice Torkornoo is seeking a court order to restrain the committee, comprising the second to sixth respondents, from undertaking any further actions in relation to the ongoing inquiry.
The case continues to attract national attention as it tests the boundaries of constitutional authority and the independence of the judiciary in Ghana.
