Ghana Slashes Visa Processing Time to Five Days to Boost Tourism and Investment

The Government of Ghana has introduced a new visa policy that will see visa applications processed within a maximum of five working days, a significant improvement from the previous 4 to 6-week timeline. The expedited system, which took immediate effect upon announcement, is part of the government’s broader strategy to position Ghana as a top destination for tourism, investment, and international engagement.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the policy in a Facebook post, stating that comprehensive systems have been deployed across Ghana’s diplomatic missions worldwide to ensure smooth and efficient implementation. “We have put in place adequate measures at our diplomatic missions to drastically cut down the visa processing time,” he said.
The move fulfills a promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during his inaugural address on January 7, 2025, where he declared that “Ghana is open for business.” The Minister emphasized that this new visa directive reflects the administration’s commitment to removing bureaucratic bottlenecks that have long hindered travel and investment into the country.
“As Foreign Minister, I am committed to positioning Ghana as the preferred destination for investors and tourists by making the country more competitive and eliminating red tape,” Mr. Ablakwa added.
The Ministry clarified that the new five-day timeline applies to the decision-making process but does not imply automatic approval of visa applications. “A decision will be made within five working days as to whether one is eligible for a Ghanaian visa or not,” the statement read.
The new visa regime is expected to have far-reaching effects by boosting tourism, enhancing foreign direct investment, and encouraging stronger ties with the Ghanaian diaspora. “Ghana is truly open for business. Come enjoy the Black Star experience,” the Minister concluded.
