Adenta Kumi Arrested in Alleged NIB Dawn Raid, Old Tafo MP Raises Alarm Over Free Speech

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has raised serious concerns over what he described as a “Rambo-style” arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, in the early hours of Friday, May 23, 2025.

In a Facebook post, the MP confirmed that Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Adenta, was picked up around dawn by eight armed individuals believed to be operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). According to Assafuah, six of the men were masked and wielding AK-47 rifles, while two were in plain clothes.

“These Rambo-style actions by government continue to raise concerns that bother on free speech and good governance,” the MP wrote, using the hashtag #FreeAdentaKumiNow to protest the arrest.

Family members also confirmed the incident to Citi News, stating that Kumi was forcefully taken from his home without prior notice or a warrant. As of now, the motive behind the arrest remains unclear, and neither the NIB nor the Ministry of National Security has issued an official statement.

The arrest comes just days after Kumi submitted a petition to President John Mahama, calling for the dissolution of the committee probing the removal of the Chief Justice. In the petition, Kumi alleged misconduct by members of the committee, including Justices Gabriel Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Yonni Kulendi. He claimed the judges were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, the counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori, at the Santoku Restaurant in Accra, allegedly discussing matters related to the inquiry.

The allegations have intensified scrutiny over the impartiality of the ongoing probe and sparked debate about political intimidation and the curbing of free speech.

Observers and civil society groups are calling for transparency and due process, urging state institutions to clarify the reasons for Kumi’s arrest and ensure his rights are protected.
