Chairman Wontumi Accuses President Mahama of Political Persecution, Claims Targeted Attacks on Business and Finances
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has levelled serious accusations against President John Dramani Mahama, alleging a coordinated campaign of political persecution and economic sabotage.
The accusations follow an attempted raid on Wontumi’s residence on Friday, May 23, 2025, by operatives from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and the Ghana Police Service, an incident that has since stirred political tensions and drawn public attention.
“Am I Not a Ghanaian Anymore?”
Speaking to journalists and supporters shortly after the attempted arrest, Chairman Wontumi questioned the fairness of his treatment under the current government.
“Am I not a Ghanaian anymore? Now that you’ve won the election and become President, does that mean I’m no longer a Ghanaian?” he asked, visibly frustrated by what he described as political suppression.
He went further to issue a rallying cry to his fellow party members and the general public:
“Ghanaians, rise! Arise, Ghanaians! All NPP supporters should rise. It is because of you that Mahama is treating me this way.”
“I’ve Never Been a Minister or CEO”
Chairman Wontumi also refuted any assumptions that he previously held powerful government roles, insisting he has only served his party as a committed campaigner.
“Was I ever a Vice President? Have I ever chaired a board? Have I ever been a CEO? Was I ever a minister?” he questioned rhetorically, arguing that his persecution cannot be justified on the basis of political privilege.
Alleged Economic Targeting
The NPP regional chairman accused President Mahama’s administration of deliberately crippling his business empire and personal finances.
“You collapsed my business back in 2013. Since you assumed office, you’ve halted all my operations. Even the bank account I rely on has been frozen,” Wontumi alleged, painting a picture of sustained political harassment.
The accusations are likely to heighten political tensions between the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition NPP, especially in the Ashanti Region, a traditional stronghold of the NPP.
So far, the Presidency has not officially responded to the claims, though political observers warn that the escalating feud could deepen partisan divisions if not properly addressed.
