Protesters Demand Reinstatement of Suspended Chief Justice at Independence Square

Accra, May 22, 2025 – A group of young Ghanaians staged a peaceful protest near Independence Square on Thursday, calling for the immediate revocation of the suspension of Chief Justice Her Ladyship Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, and demanding transparency and justice in the ongoing proceedings against her.

The demonstration, held near the venue where hearings related to the Chief Justice’s suspension are taking place, drew dozens of concerned citizens. Protesters carried placards with messages including “Chief Justice Suspension Is Political,” “Stop Undermining the Judiciary,” “Don’t Erode Public Trust,” and “Save Our Justice System.”

Protesters Decry Lack of Transparency

Protest conveners said the suspension process appeared to lack transparency and risked damaging public trust in Ghana’s judicial system.

“This is not just about one individual. It’s about protecting the sanctity and independence of our judiciary,” said one of the organizers. “If there are credible allegations, they must be addressed transparently and not behind closed doors.”

The group emphasized that Chief Justice Torkornoo has served with integrity and urged that any inquiries be handled in a manner that reinforces public confidence in the rule of law.

Accusations of Political Interference

Protesters also accused unnamed political actors of orchestrating a deliberate campaign to discredit the Chief Justice, describing her suspension as “a complete charade” and “the most serious assault on the judiciary in the nation’s history.”

They urged government authorities to cease all politically motivated interference in the judiciary and called on civil society and legal professionals to speak out in defense of judicial independence.

As the proceedings continue, public scrutiny is expected to intensify, with stakeholders closely watching how the matter is handled.
