President Mahama Removes Anne Sansa Daly from NHIA Board Over Licensing Concerns

ACCRA | May 28, 2025 — President John Dramani Mahama has revoked the appointment of Anne Sansa Daly from the Board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) amid growing concerns over her eligibility to serve as a medical representative.

A statement from the Office of the President confirmed that Prof. Dr. (Med) Ernest Yorke, Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has been nominated to replace Daly with immediate effect. Authorities have been directed to expedite his swearing-in.

Though the official communication did not elaborate on the grounds for Daly’s removal, reliable sources indicate it follows widespread professional and public criticism over her lack of a valid license to practise medicine in Ghana. Concerns had been raised about her credentials and the implications of having an unlicensed individual on the board of a major health sector regulator.

Stakeholder Pressure and Scrutiny

Stakeholders in the health sector, including members of the GMA and other health professionals, had questioned Daly’s fitness to serve on the NHIA Board, particularly given the critical oversight role it plays in shaping Ghana’s health insurance policies and ensuring access to healthcare for millions.

The NHIA Board is responsible for policy direction, financial oversight, and ensuring accountability within the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which remains one of Ghana’s key public health initiatives.

Yorke Seen as a Competent Successor

Prof. Dr. Ernest Yorke’s appointment has been welcomed by many within the medical community. He is known for his experience, leadership, and commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare delivery systems.

Health analysts say Yorke’s presence on the board is likely to restore credibility and bolster confidence in the NHIA’s governance, particularly at a time when the sector faces increasing demands for reform, efficiency, and wider coverage.
