Dr. Bawumia Arranged Sureties for Chairman Wontumi’s Bail – Hassan Tampuli Confirms

ACCRA, June 1, 2025 — Deputy Minister for Transport and Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli, has disclosed that former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia personally arranged the sureties that secured the release of embattled Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, May 31, Tampuli stated:
“Let me put this on record that Dr. Bawumia has arranged the sureties for the release of Chairman Wontumi. That has been done. His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made arrangements for the sureties.”
Chairman Wontumi was arrested earlier this week by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and was later granted bail to the tune of GH¢50 million, with two sureties to be justified—a condition many within the NPP have decried as excessive and politically motivated.
Efforts by Dr. Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to visit Wontumi on Friday were unsuccessful. Though initially granted access, officials cited security concerns due to the large crowd gathered at EOCO, prompting his transfer to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters.
Chairman Wontumi’s legal team has since filed a motion at the Accra High Court seeking a review of the bail conditions, with the hearing scheduled for June 2.
The high-profile arrest and subsequent legal proceedings have triggered renewed political tension, especially within the New Patriotic Party, where Chairman Wontumi remains a key grassroots mobilizer in the Ashanti Region.
